Domain Popularity: Link, Domain and IP Popularity
Domain popularity measures how many different domains link to a website – not how many links there are in total. In doing so it corrects the biggest flaw in early link evaluation: the assumption that 1,000 links from one domain are worth as much as 1,000 links from 1,000 domains. This guide covers all four popularity metrics, what they actually tell you and where they break down.
1. What is domain popularity?
Domain popularity (often "DomainPop") is the number of unique referring domains. The counting rule is simple: each domain counts exactly once, no matter how many links come from it.

The reason for counting this way: a second link from the same source is not a second independent recommendation. It comes from the same editorial team, the same operator, often from the same template. For assessing trust, what counts is the number of independent voices.
2. The four popularity metrics compared
Historically four metrics emerged that answer the same question with increasing strictness:

The sequence is a tightening: each level folds more sources into one. A link profile that still looks broad under C-class analysis has almost certainly grown organically.
3. A worked example
A link profile with 1,240 backlinks, broken down:

A link popularity of 1,240 looks impressive but represents only 58 independent sources – and 88 % of all links come from a single one. That distortion is exactly what makes link popularity practically useless as a metric and domain popularity the sensible baseline.
A useful derived figure: divide links by domains. Values above roughly 20 links per domain indicate sitewide placements – footer, blogroll or widget links that add little. Values between 1 and 5 are typical for editorially grown profiles.
4. IP and C-class popularity: origin and value today
Both metrics date from an era when every website sat on its own server with its own IP. The idea: if 50 linking domains all resolve to the same IP, they probably belong to one operator – a link network.
C-class popularity goes a step further and looks at the subnet. In an IPv4 address such as
93.184.216.34, 93.184.216 is the C-net. Domains in the same C-net usually sit with
the same host in the same data centre.
Why these metrics are only of limited use today:
- CDNs: tens of thousands of completely unrelated websites sit behind a single Cloudflare or Fastly IP. A shared IP means nothing here.
- Shared hosting: with large hosts, hundreds of independent customers share one IP.
- Cloud infrastructure: IPs are dynamic and change.
- IPv6: the concept of network classes no longer exists there; even in IPv4, classful addressing was replaced by CIDR long ago.
The conclusion: a low IP or C-class figure alongside high domain popularity is a signal worth investigating – but no proof of a network. The reverse still holds, though: if 200 referring domains spread across three C-nets and all use similar anchor text, that is a distinct pattern.
5. What Google actually evaluates
Google publishes none of these metrics and has never confirmed any of them as a ranking factor. Three points are demonstrable, however:
- Links from the same domain are dampened. The second, third and hundredth link from one source has considerably less effect than the first. That is precisely what domain popularity models.
- Unnatural patterns get neutralised. Since the 2012 Penguin update, and increasingly through the link spam updates from 2022 onwards, manipulative links are usually devalued automatically rather than triggering a penalty.

Domain popularity is therefore best understood as a diagnostic metric, not a target. It shows whether your link profile is broad or concentrated. It does not tell you whether it is good.
6. Putting third-party metrics in context
The common metrics are reconstructions built on their own data sets – useful for comparisons, unfit as absolute truth:

The sensible use is relative comparison: "competitor X has three times as many referring domains as we do" is a defensible statement. "We need DR 60" is not.
7. Measuring domain popularity
- Search Console, Links report: the only source with Google data. Under "Top linking sites" you see the linking domains and their link counts. The display is capped at a limited number of rows and the data is partly aggregated.
- Backlink tools: more complete lists plus historical trends, but each reflects only its own crawl state. Two tools rarely show the same numbers.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: a free second perspective with its own index.
For analysis, four figures say more than the absolute domain count:
- Links per domain – exposes sitewide distortions.
- Share of domains with only one link – high in organic profiles.
- Growth curve – steady or in jumps?
- Share of topically relevant domains – the figure that really matters.
8. Building domain popularity sustainably
The goal is not "more domains" but "more independent sources with a real reason to link":
- Publish original data: analyses, studies and benchmarks from your own records are the most reliable reason to link, because others have to cite you.
- Tools and calculators: genuinely useful utilities get linked from forums, blogs and roundups – for years.
- Expert contributions: guest articles and interviews in trade media, as long as they are editorial rather than paid.
- Digital PR: an angle that newsrooms pick up produces many different domains at once.
- Vetted industry directories: chambers, associations, trade portals – few sources, but clean ones.
- Convert mentions into links: look for unlinked mentions of your brand and ask politely.
9. Warning signs in a link profile
These patterns point to bought or network-based links:
- High link count alongside a low domain count (sitewide links).
- Many referring domains but few IPs or C-nets.
- Identical or very similar anchor text across many domains.
- A sudden spike with no discernible trigger.
- Off-topic sources from completely unrelated industries.
- Footer and sidebar placements instead of links in the main content.
- All links pointing to the same target URL instead of to different content.
On how to respond: Google usually devalues such links automatically today. The disavow tool is only worth using in rare cases – essentially with a manual action for unnatural links, or where you demonstrably built the links yourself in the past. Pre-emptive disavowing with no concrete trigger does more harm than good.
10. Limits of the metric
- It knows nothing about quality. Five links from trade publications beat 200 directory entries, yet domain popularity rates the latter 40 times higher.
- It knows nothing about relevance. A link from a cooking blog to an industrial service counts the same as a specialist article.
- It knows nothing about position or rel attributes. A
nofollowfooter link is counted the same as an editorial contextual link. - It is not comparable across industries. 300 referring domains can mean market leadership in one niche and mediocrity in another.
- It is not a Google value. Every number comes from someone else's crawl.
The sensible application is therefore always a combination: domain popularity as the volume measure, plus a qualitative assessment of your top sources and a comparison with direct competitors in the same niche.
11. Link profile analysis checklist
- Collect referring domains from Search Console and at least one tool.
- Calculate the links-to-domains ratio.
- Assess the top 20 domains individually: relevance, position, rel attribute.
- Determine the share of domains with only one link.
- Check the last 24 months of growth for spikes.
- Review anchor text distribution for anomalies.
- Review target page distribution: homepage versus deeper pages.
- Find backlinks to
404URLs and redirect them. - Benchmark three direct competitors – within the same niche only.
- Identify brand mentions without a link.
- Consider disavow only with a manual action or a documented legacy case.

What is the difference between link popularity and domain popularity?
Link popularity counts every individual backlink; domain popularity counts each referring domain only once. 500 links from one domain give a link popularity of 500 and a domain popularity of 1. Domain popularity is therefore the far more meaningful metric.
Is domain popularity an official Google ranking factor?
Google has never confirmed it as a ranking factor and publishes no such value. What is demonstrable is that repeated links from the same domain are dampened. So the metric models a real principle without being a Google signal itself.
How many referring domains do I need?
There is no universal number. The only useful benchmark is a comparison with the sites that actually rank for your target queries. In some niches 30 good sources are enough; in competitive markets several thousand are normal.
Does IP popularity still matter today?
Only to a limited extent. With CDNs, shared hosting and cloud infrastructure, entirely unrelated websites routinely share IP addresses. Low IP diversity alongside a high domain count is worth investigating, but it is no proof of a link network.
What is C-class popularity?
It counts unique IPv4 subnets based on the third address block. Domains in the same subnet usually share a host. The measure comes from classful IPv4 addressing, which was replaced by CIDR long ago, so today it is mainly of historical interest.
Why do different tools show different numbers?
Because each tool runs its own crawler and its own index. Differences of 30 per cent or more are normal. Use the same tool consistently for time series and competitive comparisons, and never read the absolute values as truth.
Should I disavow bad backlinks?
